- Biodun Ogunyemi, the president of ASUU, notes that the federal government has failed to pay the money the N50bn revitalisation fund demanded by the union

The federal government has said that university students may soon return to their various higher institutions as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) could call of its strike in the week starting from Monday, January 28.

The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, speaking with journalists after a press conference on Friday, January 25, said there was a possibility of university lecturers ending their strike soon, Daily Trust reports.

“Perhaps, by next week, I hope the ASUU strike will be over," the education minister, Adamu said.

However, ASUU has insisted that university lecturers will only return to work when their demands are met by the federal government.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 23, Biodun Ogunyemi, the president of ASUU, stated that N50 billion is the least amount for the first quarter of 2019 the union is asking for from the federal government as revitalisation fund, Nigerian Tribune reports.

Ogunyemi revealed to newsmen that as at Wednesday not only has the federal government failed to pay the money, it is showing no indication of releasing it.

Tonto dikeh shares adorable photos as she clocks 33 yrs

Actress and mum of one, Tonto Dikeh, turns 33 today June 8th. She had a photoshoot to celebrate her birthday and she shared some of the beautiful photos on her IG page. She also shared on her journey  in life and some of the lessons she has learnt. Happy birthday to her!

''Happy birthday to me!
They say ‘Life opens up many unexpected changes, beautiful possibilities and even some disastrous heartbreak. That’s how life is – it’s spontaneous, amazing, painful and yet, undeniably fulfilling’. People usually compare their life to that of a roller coaster. Spinning them round and round with unexpected twists and turns. I realised my life has been somewhat different. I would say my life has been rather one heck of an Amusement park that harbours many rollercoasters. For many years I had been jumping from one ride to the other in search of fulfilment to a void I felt Was empty. No matter the next ride I got in, it would take me to the same destination. A disappointing end to an exhilarating journey. This was the repetitive manner in which I lived my life. Little did I know that a higher being had higher plans for me. Little did I know that the Angels where looking down in heavy anticipation. Waiting for instructions from the Father to intercept my case.
You see life is like an unending school. Those who refuse to learn will never progress to a higher level. As I clock another year in the university of life I can confidently say that I am progressing to the next level. I have learnt so much in the class of Giving, Love, understanding and spirituality.
I want to thank God for the gift of life. There is nothing more precious.

Bridge collapses at heroe's children park in IMO state

What could have been a major disaster was averted just by divine providence in Owerri, the Imo State capital when a pedestrian bridge built by Governor Rochas Okorocha at
Heroes’ Children’s Park, opposite Concorde Hotel, collapsed under the governor.

The incident, which happened when the governor stopped over on his way to the NUJ Governorship Debate to interact with some students of Development Comprehensive Secondary School, Owerri, who were around the park when he came, caused a stir among on-lookers and passers-by.
Trouble however started when the governor took the students up the bridge to teach and inspire them on how to become leaders.
No sooner had the governor started the teachings with the students when the bridge caved in with the iron bracing of the bridge cut under the weight of the governor and the students and the students panicked and started shouting “Jesus! Jesus!!”, while the governor feigned ignorance of the situation even as his security aides rounded the spot to help him down.

Our correspondent who was there reports that when the incident happened, the governor’s aides, especially the members of the security operatives, who were visibly shaken, started shouting to the students: “Jump out!, get down!, jump out!” and the students jumped out from the bridge and ran for dear.
In the midst of the melee, the governor said “we’re too many here, please jump down”.
Our reporter can report that this was the first time the bridge was being used since it was constructed two years ago by Governor Okorocha.

It would be recalled that Akachi Road Bridge and several buildings (including the multi-million naira Imo Film Academy, a new security gate being constructed behind the main entrance gate to the Government House; office complex being constructed in the Imo State university campus, Owerri as well Princess Hotel Okigwe) constructed by the governor in the state had collapsed raising questions about the standard of such projects.

FG scraps HND certificates in Nigerian polytechnics

The Nigerian Government has scrapped award of HND certificates by Polytechnics. The decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council, FEC today where the approval of a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system was made.

In effect, the award of HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes.

Also, all the programmes currently being run by polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent, will be scrapped. Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.

The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

To kick-start the new policy, the nation’s two most prominent polytechnics Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.  And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment.

The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities. The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, his ministry would, however, continue to license private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qualification at ND and National Certificate in Education (NCE) levels.

He said, “There will be no more award of HND. After we have exhausted the current students under the programme, there will be no more award of HND. This means that there will be no fresh admission for HND programmes. And in addition, any programme that is not technical will be out of the polytechnics. About 70 per cent of polytechnic graduates are in the non-technical courses. It is going to be a rigorous implementation programme.”

A ministerial committee to ensure the smooth implementation of all that is required for the take-off of the reform initiatives is to begin work immediately.  Adamu said, “The HND certificate will remain a legal tender in Nigeria and holders of such certificate will continue to be recognised as the equivalent of first degree holders without discriminatory remunerations and limit to progression in the work place.

“The NCE certificate will be retained as the minimum teaching qualification at the basic level of education. Any higher qualifications by these private or state-owned polytechnics will be only affiliation with a university. So, HND is no longer in existence, but existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender.”

13 Nigerian internet fraudsters in tears after getting arrested in Philippines (photo)

The Philippines police have arrested 13 Nigerians and a Filipino accomplice allegedly behind an “online scamming syndicate” that victimized Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and other nationalities during raids conducted overnight in Imus City in Cavite province on Sunday.

Imus City police chief Supt. Audi Madrideo said members of what he described as an “online syndicate” would create fraudulent Facebook accounts, with stolen photos and profiles, and pose as members of the United States military.

Emmanuel Nnandi, one of the alleged group leaders, was arrested in an entrapment operation around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, in a money transfer outlet in Barangay (village) Tanzang Luma 2.

Nnandi led authorities to other members of the group who were consequently collared from three apartments. Police found out that the Nigerians had entered the country using student visas.

It was allegedly the same group faced complaints in Pasay City and Las Piñas City before they moved to Cavite province. Authorities are now preparing to file a case of syndicated estafa against the suspects.

Hard times draws near for university students as minister proposes extra year for undergraduates

In a bid to address the country’s graduate unemployment crisis, students in Nigeria may have to spend an extra year at university to obtain the necessary skills required for the labour market.
The proposal, made by Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Onwuka on 8 May at a recent retreat for the Governing Council of Federal Universities, marks the first time in recent years that a high-ranking federal government official has openly admitted that Nigeria’s university system is in crisis.
“Many university graduates are not good enough to be employed by the industries”, Onwuka said. The Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme had also failed universities, he said, while the Nigerian university system had failed in producing quality graduates who should be employed in industry.
“This is a big challenge and it remains a major problem in the Nigerian university system. At what point do we find the synergy in addressing this problem of graduate unemployment?” he asked.
The minister said details of the proposed extra year for other courses would soon be finalised and sent to the National Assembly

(Photos)Daughter of late director general of NAFDAC weds her Canadian husband

The daughter of the late Dora Akunyili, who was a former Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria and Nigerian Minister of Information and Communications from 2008 to 2010, Chidiogo Akunyili has tied nuptial knots with her White Boyfriend – Clayton.

Chidiogo took to Instagram to share lovely photos of them and wrote a lengthy but lovely caption;

Celebrating our civil union  Excited for all the white & colourful celebrations with friends and family to come  Thank you Andrew for being a daily reminder of the miracles that exist in this world and the power we have to tap into it.

On a cold February evening in Geneva, I wrote down words that I feel connected our destinies & led our paths to cross 7 months later in the deserts of Nevada. “Monday, 8 Feb 2016. Geneva – Clayton asked that I do a true exercise of what I want. Here goes. I seek a partnership with a strong man, mind, body and spirit.

I seek a partnership with a man who will cherish, love and honour me & the life we build together, supporting each other through the journey with kindness, love, a smile & words that put difficulties in perspective.

He will not be away from home all the time but have a career that allows for him to assist strongly and sometimes wholly in building a home for us and for the children. He will be conscious and inspire us to grow in consciousness.

He will be full of kindness and have a depth of love that leaves us inspired by what two people can achieve together. He will hold me and we will give gratitude. He will be flexible.

He is adventurous/open to new experiences. He is happy in himself & together we share happiness in God and Love.” 7 months later after strong guidance came to me to go to Burning Man — I met him. It was a story of the union of souls. I felt I had written him to existence and rejoiced in the connection we shared.

One I know started with a decision to focus on the wholeness of my own soul — self love — & from the space of taking time for self I was ready to take time for anothers soul and him mine inturn. I was not looking for a man so save me but a man to hold me up in my own strength. Together we continue to weave a web of care, love, strength, that isn’t without its difficulties but I’m learning & growing with & from them.

I say yes to a life spent together in partnership — to holding each other up outwardly and on the inside — to loving every part of ourselves and each other knowing we have the power to create and re-create from a place of peace with what is & the infinity that can be.

Army, customs intercepts three trucks loaded with 300,000 live cartridges in Ogun state

Security agencies yesterday morning intercepted 300,000 cartridges that were smuggled into Nigeria through the Benin Republic border. The cartridges were concealed in a false base of three heavy-duty trucks and had successfully gone past borders until they were intercepted at Igbogila-Ilara area of Ogun State.Although the drivers and crewmembers fled, upon closer inspection, the trucks were deemed empty until the security operatives unearthed the large cache of ammunition. When they opened the metal cover, hundreds of cartons of cartridges of the 12-calibre were found concealed underneath.
Revelations have, however, emerged on how the unknown smugglers, allegedly aided by some policemen, tried to deceive security operatives to smuggle the three truckloads of arms and ammunition into the country, through the Ogun State land border. The smugglers had declared the trucks as empty with the aim of deceiving officials of the Nigerian Customs Service at Owode-Ilaro Road in Ogun, but the officers suspected foul play and played smart on the smugglers’ team, which include some policemen in uniform.

The trucks were intercepted in Balogun village, near Egua in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun, by military officers attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade of 81 Division, Nigerian Army in Alamala, Abeokuta.Ogun State Area Command Public Relations Officer of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, who confirmed the incident to The Guardian yesterday, said the soldiers were able to intercept the trucks.

He explained: “There were three trucks that passed through our approved checkpoint escorted by policemen. We saw that those trucks were not empty, so we enquired from the police officers and they said that the vehicles were suspected stolen vehicles and that they are conveying them to one of their units for further investigation.

“We decided to allow them thinking that they were doing their constitutional duties. Then, we were not satisfied and our men decided to follow the vehicles until they got to an army checkpoint and the officers intercepted them. The army have their own intelligence, so they were able to open the trucks and discovered that the arms and ammunition were carefully concealed.

“I cannot ascertain the quantity, but what I can tell you is that those items were incriminating. It was intercepted and opened in the presence of customs and other law enforcement agencies. They took all the trucks to one of their formations in Lagos,” he said. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said: “I don’t think there is anything concerning police in the matter.” He directed The Guardian to find out from the Nigerian Army.

While briefing the press on the discovery, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division, Major General Enobong Udoh, said the arrest was based on a tip-off received from well-meaning Nigerians during the anti-illegal bunkering, anti-pipeline vandalism and anti-smuggling patrols.

The GOC, who was represented by the 35 Artillery Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Olaniyi Olatunde, said the trucks were intercepted in conjunction with the police, the Department of State Security (DSS) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The three trucks weighing five-tonnes with vehicle registration numbers: ANAMBRA AAH 409 ZV, LAGOS BDG 782 XU and LAGOS GGF 88 XU, were loaded with thousands of live cartridges. On getting to Balogun village, along Igbogila-Ilara road, Ogun, they were intercepted and live cartridges in boxes and cartons were carefully concealed and sealed in a false-base made up of wooden platform with metallic plates.

The GOC said: “The drivers and their crew on sighting the troops abandoned their trucks and fled. A team is on the trail of the fleeing drivers, their crew, corroborators and sponsors as investigation is ongoing. Members of the public are encouraged to continue to always reach out by contacting the nearest military barracks for timely useful information or call the following numbers: 07069353889 and 08060492529 (Ojo), 07017064979 (Badagry), 08034347484 (Victoria Island), 08065992320 (Ikeja),

Nigerian doctor warns ladies on the risk of fixing eyelashes

- just recently A Nigerian doctor at Mushin General Hospital, Dr Ayopo Adeyemi has revealed the risk of wearing eye lashes

- The new development of fixing lashes has been widely been in use by many Nigerian ladies as a beauty enhancer and fashion necessity

- It turns out the fashion is more dangerous than perceived to its subscribers

Nigerian medical practitioner, Dr Ayopo Adeyemi has warned women on the dangers of fixing faux lashes. Dr Adeyemi revealed the harmful effects while speaking to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on May 27. According to her, the fashion trend has been adopted by millions of women in Nigeria despite the mind-bugging consequences.

Speaking on the health implications, Adeyemi shared that some of the adverse effects of the beauty trend include corneal abrasions or ulcers, damage of the natural eyelashes and eye sensitivity.

Ayopo revealed that the natural lashes have a way of preventing dirt, sweat, bacteria and other foreign materials from entering into the eye by trapping and keeping out anything that comes near but the presence of a foreign object such as fake lashes, does the opposite and causes more harm than good.

Many Nigerian celebrities are also guilty for adopting the proven harmful style. BBNaija's Cee C is well known for her love for the feather eye shade.

Dr adeyemi who works with Mushin General Hospital in Lagos said: " The use of harmful chemicals on the eyelashes can cause them to fall out quicker than they naturally would and it is also dangerous when tools to be used come in close proximity to the eye.

“Artificial eyelashes can cause trauma to the eye either through the glue and other materials used or unprofessional operators; there could be introduction of microbes into the eye causing conjunctivitis of all types. The lashes themselves can cause allergic conjunctivitis trapping and retaining dirt around the eye.”

She further advised ladies to stay away from the ill-fashion and stated they retain their natural ones and find means to keep it healthy.
